Iwi Environmental Management Plan

The Ngati Tahu-Ngati Whaoa Iwi Environmental Plan was developed in conjunction with iwi members over 2 years. The process involved many hui with marae, iwi, kaumatua and others. The plan was released in November 2013.

The Iwi Environmental Plan takes the name
“Rising above the mist – Te Aranga Ake i te Taimahatanga”.

Wai-o-Tapu
Scenic Reserve

Wai-o-Tapu Scenic Reserve is located at Wai-o-Tapu just south of Maunga Kakaramea (Rainbow Mountain). The reserve covers approximately 125 hectares and includes geothermal features such as the Champagne pool and Lady Knox geyser. Land to the west of the reserve is managed by the Department of Conservation. Wai-o-Tapu Thermal Wonderland Tourist area leases the Wai-o-Tapu Scenic Reserve from the Runanga.

Ruatihi o Paeroa
Scenic Reserve

Ruatihi o Paeroa Scenic Reserve is located on the Paeroa Range near Reporoa. The reserve covers approximately 84 hectares and is located in two distinct blocks of land. The Reserve covers the two main peaks of the Paeroa Range and is primarily located within the boundaries of Te Kopia Scenic Reserve which is managed by the Department of Conservation.

Projects

The Runanga leads and implements many environmental projects throughout the Ngati Tahu-Ngati Whaoa rohe. These projects focus on building capacity within the Ngati Tahu-Ngati Whaoa people as well as achieving environmental gains for valuable taonga such as geothermal areas and the Waikato awa.
